Amazon Product Image Requirements, and How to Meet Them

Amazon suppresses listings for four technical reasons. This page checks all four — including whether your background is actually #FFFFFF.

How to use it

  1. Drop your MAIN image.
  2. The checker measures pixels, file size and corner background colour.
  3. Reshoot the background if it fails, or hit Fix for a size problem.

The four rules that get listings suppressed

Amazon publishes these in Seller Central, and they are enforced by automated scanning before a human ever sees the photo. First, the background of a MAIN image must be pure white — RGB 255, 255, 255 exactly. Off-white, cream, light grey and gradient backdrops all fail, and this is the single most common rejection.

Second, the product must fill at least 85% of the frame. A small item floating in a big white square fails even though the background is perfect. Third, the longest side must be at least 500 px as a technical floor, with 1000 px required before the zoom feature activates at all — Amazon recommends 2000×2000. Fourth, the file must be under 10 MB and in sRGB, not CMYK.

What is banned on the MAIN image

No text, logos, watermarks, borders, colour blocks, badges or promotional messaging. No props or accessories that are not included in the sale. No mannequins for most apparel categories — flat lay or invisible mannequin instead. No multiple items unless it is a genuine bundle, and the component items must be shown at comparable scale.

Secondary images are far more relaxed: lifestyle shots, infographics, size charts, comparison tables and multiple angles are all allowed there, though they should still be 2000 px.

Fixing an off-white background without Photoshop

If the checker reports an average around 245–252 rather than 255, the photo was shot against something slightly off-white, or the camera metered it that way. Two options: reshoot on a pure white sweep with even lighting, or cut the product out and place it on #FFFFFF.

Be careful with automated background removal — it often leaves a 1–2 px grey halo along the product edge, which shows up on Amazon as a shadow. Zoom to 400% and check the edge before uploading.

Frequently asked questions

Does Amazon really check the exact RGB value?

Yes. Amazon states the MAIN image background must be RGB 255,255,255, and its automated review flags backgrounds that read as off-white. A value of 250 is close enough to look white on your monitor and still fail.

Is 1000 px or 2000 px the requirement?

1000 px on the longest side is the minimum for zoom to work at all, and 2000 px is what Amazon recommends. Under 1000 px the image can still upload, but you lose zoom, which measurably hurts conversion.

Can I use a PNG with a transparent background?

Amazon wants the background rendered white, not transparent. A transparent PNG can display against the marketplace background colour instead of white, so flatten it onto #FFFFFF before uploading.

How many images should a listing have?

Amazon allows up to 9 images per ASIN and recommends at least 6 plus a video. Only the first is a MAIN image with the white background rule; the rest can be lifestyle and infographic shots.

Why does my photo fail the 85% fill rule?

Because there is too much empty space around the product. Crop tighter so the item extends close to the frame edges while keeping a small even margin.
